Can I Get In Trouble If I Backup Wii Games?

By: Dominico Hastings

This is probably a very important question you should ask yourself before deciding to copy or backup your game.

If you own the game and are just making a backup for safety purposes, what can be the harm right?

However, making it legal to copy or backup games also poses the problem of abuse by pirating games.

Look all over the Internet and you'll see how this privilege can be abused.

For the honest gamers who simply want a backup in case of accidental damage, this is very unfortunate. You shouldn't have to pay for the same game more than once.

It is not cheap to buy the same game twice or even three times.

The Fair Use Act and the Audio Home Recording Act of 1992 come to our rescue to answer this question.

It is clearly stated in the act that making a backup copy of a game (or any other digital recording) is perfectly fine as long as you own a copy of it.

It is made clear though that you must be the current owner of the game and will not distribute it for profit or otherwise.

Although titled the "Audio Home Recording Act of 1992", it applies to all sorts of multimedia such as music, movies, games etc.

However, the same Audio Home Recording Act of 1992 states that the companies making these products do not have to simplify the backup process.

In other words, they can make it a living nightmare for you to back up that precious wii game.

If you can somehow manage to break though this copy protection barrier, you can get into no legal hot water.
