Deciding The Number Of Poker Chips You Need

By: Thom Riemersma.

Any number of poker chips can be purchased. Usually they start at 300, but you can buy as many as 1000. It just depends how many you will be wanting.

The answer depends on how many people you generally have over for poker night and what kind of people you generally have over. For example, five tight-passive rocks will need less poker chips than five loose-aggressive maniacs. The maniacs are going to bet more chips more aggressively.

Conventional wisdom says that a three hundred chip poker set is good for about 3 - 4 people. I say that a three hundred chip poker set is good for nothing more than replacing poker chips that you've lost or have worn out. Who do you know that plays poker with only 3 to 4 people? No one! That's barely even a game! And if you are playing with 3 to 4 people they're probably being super-aggressive. Ace-x can look like the nuts when you're only against a couple other people.

In reality 500 poker chips is a bare minimum. If your games regularly have 9 or more people, I'd invest in a set of 1000 to 1500 poker chips. This doesn't necessarily mean that every chip will always be in play, but it does give you leeway when a couple people want to buy in big. In addition, your chips will last a lot longer if 100% of them aren't in play every week.

You will need to try to have a lot of low denomination chips. It is wise to have a ratio of only 30%-40% of chips symbolizing high numbers. The reason for this is the fact that many bets will use medium to low chips. Try not to get equal parts of each denomination when you buy a set of 1000. Instead remember to get more chips with lower. Of course this is a matter of rational thinking but it can also be easy to forget.

To recap your number of chips will depend on how aggressive your players are and how many are playing. You need to have enough chips for people to bet high if they need. The range of chips is important, so lean more heavily on the lower number chips. The best way to determine how many chips you need is to decide on 500 as your base and add 100 to 150 for everyone over a group of five.
